Getting in late on this, but just wanted to share my Dr. Buss moment.

I met Dr. Buss at some random club on Sunset strip right around 2000 or 2001. As was his custom, he had a gaggle of hot young ladies with him. I bumped into him as I was coming in from having a smoke and immediately recognized the owner of my beloved franchise. I was a little drunk and it was years ago, but I vaguely remember saying something like "OMFG you are Dr. Buss!! I f'ing love the Lakers! Thank you so much for being an awesome owner and paying Shaq all that money to play for us! Do you think we are going to get another chip this year??!!" And of course he was cool as a cucumber and just said "Hey no problem. Thanks for being a fan. I sure hope we do win. Go Lakers!!" And that was it. And life went on. Cool ass cat. R.I.P. Dr. Buss.

Thank you Jerry for all the memories. Your vision has created millions of Lakers fans as well as basketball fans worldwide. You brought a city, families and friends together for 10 championship celebrations. You have always helped the sick and the underprivleged with your generosity. I wish I had a chance to shake your hand.

RIP you are truly the GREATEST LAKER OF ALL TIME!!!

That made me tear up a little.

Have been able to read up on many of stories about Dr. Buss since about 8am this morning, it's fascinating how he built his finances in order to buy the Lakers and the Daily News which touched briefly on how hard he worked.

He was in his mid-20s (about 26) when he and Frank decided to try their hand at real estate investing. It started with $1000 from his pocket and with 3 others, they bought a 14-unit apartment and worked weekends to save money on repairs... by the time he was 46, he had millions of dollars and was ready to buy the Lakers from Jack Kent Cooke. It's amazing how he maximized his time to build an empire in 20 years. In a People Magazine article, he said that he worked Saturdays for 10 years, saved up his money and then invested it again at 17% to get to his first million.

http://www.dailynews.com/news/ci_22616982/dr-jerry-buss-80-chemistry-was-right-lakers

Quote:
Eventually, he met a fellow worker and poker player, Frank Mariani. The two devised a financial plan to begin investing in real estate.

They decided they needed $1,000 to start with, so each of them put $83.33 aside each month toward that goal. This was at a time when Buss was making about $700 a month and supporting a wife, Joanne, and the first of his children.

In 1959, Buss and Mariani added two partners and put a $4,000 down payment on a 14-unit apartment building in West L.A. The cost was $105,000, and Buss would admit to being "scared" diving into such a risky business proposition. He and Mariani spent weekends doing repairs and painting to save on expenses.

When the Southern California real estate market exploded in the 1970s, it propelled Buss to new heights. He owned hotels in Palm Springs and San Diego, frequented the race track at Del Mar and bought a large luxury boat in Marina del Rey.

Yet Buss' foray into sports was also a relatively small-game start-up.

At the height of U.S. tennis' popularity in the 1970s, he bought into the Los Angeles Strings of the World Team Tennis league, starting at the L.A. Sports Arena. He and his attorney, Jerry Fine, put in $25,000 each for the team.

The Strings lost $200,000 in its first year, and $1 million in its second.

"This is going to be my education in sports," Buss told everyone who asked why he wanted to stick with this red-ink proposition.

The Strings eventually moved into the Forum in Inglewood, built by Lakers and Kings owner Jack Kent Cooke.

Buss, who had amassed a couple million dollars by the age of 40, had heard rumors of Cooke considering selling his sports empire. He asked him to give him a shot at buying it.

Cooke called Buss to his Las Vegas home in May 1979 and asked him if he was ready to do a deal. Cooke's accelerated desire to get the sale done was a pending divorce, and the then-owner of the Los Angeles Daily News wanted to move to Virginia to be closer to his ownership in the NFL's Washington Redskins.

"There were times when I felt I'd gotten in a little over my head (because Cooke) may have had the toughest will I've ever seen," Buss said in Roland Lazenby's 2006 book, "The Show: The Inside Story of the Spectacular Los Angeles Lakers."

The $16 million for the Lakers was only part of a $67.5 million transaction. It included the purchase of Cooke's Forum ($33 million), his NHL team in the Kings ($8 million) and a large ranch in the Sierra Nevada. Buss had to transfer the rights to his Chrysler Building in New York, as well as other property in other states.

The complicated transaction was then a record for any sports-related deal at the time, one that took dozens of lawyers and accountants to sort out and avoid huge tax liens for either side.

Combined with their real estate company, Buss and Mariani held assets of $350 million when the dust settle.

I like to envision him at the poker table - you'd see him playing with
(and often beating) professionals on those late night ESPN poker
shows ... he was a mastermind, but what's rare with such a mastermind
is that he also had a personal touch. He cared about people.

I don't know what to think about out future because, being born in L.A.
in 1980, I don't know anything else but 'his' culture of basketball, attitude
and way of putting a team together. I only know 'his' expectations and
record. I only expect what he made routine ... which is absurd. Nobody
'expects' to win a ring every 3 years over 30 years ... but now I do, because
he gave us that.

I've listened to Jim and Jeanie over a long period now being as fanatical about
the team as I am and knowing it would be them someday.

All I can say is ... one of them is a lot more like pops than the other. One
has that little bit of "winning" sparkle in their eye and sense of pride, or
maybe just those extra IQ points ... moreso than the other.

I hope the 'other' guy lets her run dads business and is graceful about it.

If not ... it's the end of an era in more ways than one.

Thanks Dr. Buss for being a winner and making winning an expectation.

RIP Dr. Buss!

Even if I lived a thousand miles away (Philippines), as a Laker fanatic, I can't help but feel sad about your passing. The Lakers have been a part of my life (I would later find out that coincidentally I started being a fan when Magic was drafted, which meant I became a fan at the same time he bought the Lakers).

In the department that I handle in our company, I would always use the Lakers and of course Dr. Buss in how one should set a standard when it comes to excellence. You should see the faces of the people in my department. I told them that my ultimate dream job was working for the Lakers, unfortunately it will just remain a dream.

Dr. Jerry Buss - Greatest Owner in Sports!

The man that was mainly responsible for many of my best childhood joys, the pride of being an Angeleno, and for bringing in so many people that would not otherwise unite together... you are the man!!!

Thank you for your great impact on some of the biggest joy and happiness in my life. The sense if pride you gave us Laker fans is unmatched and will never be forgotten. 16 finals in 34 years is unfathomable.

The Greatest Entertainment Mogul off all time!!!

RIP Dr. Buss
