Lakers keep rolling along
Bryant and Odom lead them to their first three-game winning streak since January.

Drive time: The Lakers’ Kobe Bryant, who scored 43 points, splits the Bucks’ defense en route to the basket.

LOS ANGELES – These are the days in an NBA season when Phil Jackson is used to seeing his great teams begin flexing their substantial muscles, warming up to hoist heavy trophies and pose in spotlights of playoff glory.

This season, Jackson still is seeing expansion, and on some level it has to be more satisfying to see late-season growth that is more than just oiling up.

The Lakers got their first three-game winning streak since mid-January with a 101-96 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks on Friday night at Staples Center. It wasn't the most beautiful of things, which only made it more meaningful for a team Lamar Odom has lamented isn't skilled at "winning ugly."

For Lakers, win over Bucks is reasonable
Bryant scores 43, and Kwame has another strong game
By Ross Siler, Staff Writer

Whatever the motivation, the Lakers had to find it for a game Friday night against the Milwaukee Bucks that just seemed to show up on the schedule in late March.

They should have no similar problems Sunday with the Hornets coming to Staples Center and a chance to go four games up in the Western Conference standings with 10 games to play.

The Lakers moved another game closer to returning to the playoffs and fulfilling the mandate with which Phil Jackson returned as coach, beating the Bucks 101-96 for their first three-game winning streak since Jan. 16.

It came as Kobe Bryant scored 43 points and put on a 3-point shooting show in the first quarter and Kwame Brown built on his 21-point, 12-rebound game Wednesday against Sacramento.

It came with Lamar Odom continuing his remarkable shooting from beyond the arc as part of a 15-0 third-quarter run and Smush Parker coming up with a big steal with 48.9 seconds remaining against Michael Redd.

The Lakers beat the Bucks for the 10th consecutive time - their longest winning streak against any NBA team - and now sit 1 games ahead of the Kings for seventh and three games ahead of the Hornets for eighth.

Lakers notes: Bynum missing Madness
By Ross Siler, Staff Writer

Phil Jackson had the television tuned to the Boston College-Villanova game in his office before the Lakers played Friday night. The day before at practice, Jackson declared the middle weekend of the NCAA Tournament to be the best part of March Madness.

For all the college basketball Jackson has watched, though, one thought that hadn't crossed his mind was the possibility of rookie center Andrew Bynum playing right now for top-seeded Connecticut.

Before he turned pro out of high school, Bynum committed to play for coach Jim Calhoun. He not only picked the Huskies to win the national championship as part of the Lakers' tournament pool but keeps in touch with players on the team.

"Probably would have been sitting on the bench with Connecticut," Jackson said. "Who knows? That's just hypothetical stuff you can't even project. But it certainly is a talented team. The growth that he has had here, I think, has been a beneficial factor for him in his overall game."

Bucks Lose To Lakers

(AP) LOS ANGELES Kobe Bryant got the Los Angeles Lakers off to a fast start with his marksmanship behind the 3-point arc. He won it for them at the free throw line.

Bryant scored 43 points, including six foul shots in the final 20 seconds, and the Lakers beat the Milwaukee Bucks 101-96 Friday night to record their first three-game winning streak in more than two months.

Bryant hadn't been going to the line much lately, averaging fewer than six attempts over his previous eight games. He was a perfect 14-for-14 against the Bucks, who allowed Seattle to go 41-for-51 from the line in Wednesday's loss to the SuperSonics.

"It feels good to be able to get back to the free throw line and have confidence that when I attack the basket, the other team isn't just going to have liberty to hit me and get away with it," Bryant said. "I'll be able to get to the free throw line and get some easy points for our team.

"It makes our lives a lot easier when you get to the free throw line and not have to go through our sets and execute our offense all the time."
