The Stones' are more blues rock than anything, so really their sound is more "real" and stands the test of time.

You know since this topic crawled back up towards the top, I'll weigh in on a couple things. First of all, it's tough to be sure exactly what permutation of The Cure people are talking about. Due to the revolving door of styles and line-ups there's really been about 3 different versions of the band. Their early minimalist post-punk, their more experimental/jazzy back catalog, and the pop/rock songs their best known for (you could even say 4 if you wanted to count their screetchingly awful recent stuff). So there's a dissonance here about exactly what 'music' they're talking about. For example, personally I think there's something to be saud about the kind of horn and violin arrangements of their 'middle' period, but I can't stand the song 'Friday I'm in Love'.

But more importantly, I think it's self defeating to try to act like there's some kind of magic universal music ranking. If someone likes the 'authenticity' of a classic 3 piece rock band, and someone else likes multiple levels of keyboard produced harmony, and someone else likes the acerbic showmanship of metal, I don't think anything is gained by trying to qualitatively rank one over the other. Being able to decide your artistic preferences for yourself, and having them grow as you grow, is what makes them worthwhile. What's important is that you actually decide for yourself and continually, and not let some stupid magazine, or award show (or worse some jerk on lg) form your opinion for you.

ban.......j/k.

You're definitely in the minority. I love the Stones because it's well.....it's good ol plain rock n roll. Something that's been missing from today's music.

I know. It's only rock and roll.

But I like it.

Reaaalllllyyy like their song off the Crow soundtrack. "Burn" Very cool lyrics and the beat creates a nice mood as well.

Boys don't cry is a classic. Any of you older guys rock the hair style back in the days?

I probably wouldn't even think of them if I were trying to think of all-time great bands, but they do have a lot of songs that I like, and even a couple that I really love. I guess as a band they just don't stand out to me for some reason.

If I'm ranking 80's bands I'm putting them below R.E.M and The Replacements, but they're up there. Somewhere on par with The Jesus and Mary Chain.

It does not surprise me that they are not all that popular with people here, after all, most all the people that do not care for them were born after their best releases (1979 - 1982), which are (IMO) Boys Don't Cry, 17 Seconds, Faith, & Pornography.

After that time they became MUCH more commercial and were more of what I call bubblegum-goth.

Having owned somewhere in the neighborthood of 5,000 CD & LP's, I would definately rate them as Top-10 Eighties Band, as for All-Time, probably Top-25...!

Check out the Cure song: Play for Today on YouTube...
