LakersGround Presents: Cap's Corner with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar

Periodically, Kareem will be answering questions exclusively from LGers. Here is our first installment of Cap's Corner...

LakersGround: It seemed like you went right over to Bynum after
they won the championship. What were your thoughts then and did you
have anything to say to Drew?

Kareem: This was Andrew's first winning experience so for him it
was a unique evening because he had never won a championship in high
school nor 4 years as a pro so it was a great experience for him to be on
top and I enjoyed sharing it with him.

LakersGround: Who was the better trumpet player, Miles Davis or
Clifford Brown?

Kareem: Technically Clifford Brown but as a composer song writer
and innovator in musical style, Miles was a unique individual.

To see Kareem's thoughts on a variety of other topics, visit his website www.kareemabduljabbar.com.

Got a question for Kareem? Post your questions here and we will take two questions to Kareem for his insight. (We will also go through our list of previous questions, too, if you've already posted the question you want to ask.)

First. .

Question: During the season, Phil Jackson issues certain books to his players to read, which books would you suggest and why?

Right on about Clifford Brown. Cap knows his jazz.

Good question, Just Ming.

My question would be:

How can Andrew Bynum now break through to the next level and cement his presence as one of the top centers in the NBA? What does he have to work on to get there?

Now come on BBG, you KNOW that was MY question DB put up into KAJ's ear. Ain't nothing a Jazz fan likes talking more than Jazz.

Does Cap decide which questions to answer or do you pick and choose the questions?

Chet Baker's soulful vocal of "My Funny Valentine" is still my personal favorite.

Oh, I knew the second I read that question that you had asked it. I was just saying the question Just-Ming asked about which books Phil suggests also a good question. The Cliff-Miles question I was 100% sure had come from you.

Thanks DB, and Thanks CAP.

My Question:

What was it like watching the Lakers for the first time from the Sideline as a coach, not knowing you couldn't play?

Another one similar to that..

When you retired, what did you feel when the Lakers played their first game without the you?

KBCB and I were going round and round on the jazz question in OT. Glad DB asked it, not liking the answer though. I still have a 78 rpm of Chet Baker Sings.

I like both Chet and Miles. You can't go wrong with any of these guys. But Cliff Brown I love. Of course when it comes down to it, there's no one I love more than Charlie Parker. There's very little stuff of his that I can listen to and not go to the deep end emotionally. But Cliffy is up there, as well.

to all the chet lovers - i have to reccomend 2 of my favorite all time cd's -

1. "diane" (duet with paul bley)

2. "let's get lost" (soundtrack)

my english is just not good enough to describe the beauty in those two albums.

(my funny valentine's not in there, but as two complete albums - these are my absolute favorite chet recordings)

Thanks for the suggestion. Your English is just fine. It's just hard to explain certain emotions, moods and sounds no matter how well one speaks a language.

Damn skippy. I met KAJ once a long time ago, before I ever was into Jazz. I can't wait to meet him again. BTW, I respect Cap more than I do any NBA player past or present.
