OK, since we were talking about modern punk bands, how about the originals? Here are your contenders:
NY Dolls- technically pre-punk, but paved the way fro the Ramones.
Ramones- considered by most the original punk band
Sex Pistols- Perhaps the most (in)famous, first of the brit punks
The Clash- Hard to argue that "London Calling" isn't the best album of the genre
I know there are many others, from the Dead Kennedy's to Black Flag, etc., but these are IMO, the gold standard.

It is hard to separate the Ramones and The Clash. The Clash was more critically acclaimed and London Calling was Rolling Stone's Album of the Decade for the 80's. They burned brighter, but the Ramones stayed relevant longer, and I prefer their music. In many ways, the American teen revolution of the 60s that was tied to Rock - n - Roll was repeated as the UK teen revolution of the 70s tied to Punk. The UK roots are quite important to the early Punk bands, and The Clash epitomizes the genre, so they get the definitive nod. The Sex Pistols have been credited with being Punk pioneers, and they were for the couple years it took them to implode and self destruct. 1 album, 4 singles and some crazy concerts aren't enough, IMO, although they certainly are the face of the scene. NY Dolls are pre-punk to the purists, and their pioneering ways deserve credit but aren't enough to overcome the musical superiority and further exploration of the "punk" craft by the other bands mentioned.
Due to my age and geography, I preferred many of the West Coast punk bands that followed. X was a favorite early on, and my interest soon extended to many of the Hard Core surf-punk bands like everyone's favorite Suicidal Tendencies, a lot of ska, and on through to one of my all time favorties - Sublime. |

^^Good points!
I included NYD's because in the "purist" arguments, there is a sub-genre of purists who argue that the Dolls really started the genre, but I agree with your take.
I am torn between the Clash and Ramones, but I prefer the Clash musically, both in what they put out and in their musicianship. I think they have had a bigger influence, musically, on more bands than the Ramones did, but that's just my take.
I can't help but have a soft spot for the Pistols, as they epitomized punk on and off stage. There was no way they weren't going down in flames, but what a ride while it lasted... _________________ “We must always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Whoa. Tough one. All of those were great bands and had great guitarists (Thunders, Jones, Strummer, Johnny Ramone). the Pistols were definitely very raw and gritty. The Dolls inspired the whole glam rock scene. If it weren't for the Clash, we wouldn't have bands like Rancid or Sublime. But I'd have to go w/ the Ramones Even though they were a little poppy, they played punk rock the way it should be played IMO. Loud, fast, and simple. |

Ramones or Clash for sure. At least that's the type of music I associate with Punk. The Dolls, TV, Talking Heads and later guys like Elvis Costello and the like are given the title "punk" but I never got into them as much. |

I've never seen Costello or Talking heads listed as punk. Interesting... _________________ “We must always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented.” ― Elie Wiesel |

Many consider them a part of the 70's punk scene. |

The only two bands I saw was the New York Dolls : who were NOT a punk band when I saw them and the Clash..
But I voted for the Clash...
The only band that matters... |

Wow... I haven't listened to Minor Threat in, like years. Good choice though... but the Clash is definitely my choice and I can't leave out Crass! _________________ (\__/)

Sex Pistols: Rock musos and current (post)hardcore ethos really disagree on the Pistols, because it's hard to separate the music from the image. After the British Invasion acts, the Pistols were the greatest boy band in the history of rock and that is meant as an absolute compliment.
Clash: Favorite punk band ever, but they only made one "punk" album. And thank God for that. Rather than limiting themselves to a tired ethos for the "real" or "pure" or doing endless permutations of White Riot for the oi hawks (though that was cool tool), they became the rock band version of the urban sound system. Party music for the class struggle. Power chords and two-tone grooves. Rock heroes and MCs. London Calling is their best album front to back, but Sandinista may be the more fascinating one.
NY Dolls: I'm kinda predisposed to glam-punk, whether it's the Dolls, D-Generation, or whomever. Johnny Thunders had one of the greatest guitar sounds of the 70s.
Ramones: They weren't the only first punk band; they were the first dudes to find anarchy through embracing their feminine side. The Ramones didn't just co-opt the girl-group melodies of early 60s Kennedy pop, they also played homage to all the cooing, all the "oh yeahs", the lipstick traces behind all of that Shangri Lala stuff. All while dressing like heshers and playing power chords and surf rock at hyperspeed. Snarky, ironic, happy, violent yet intimate. This stuff is timeless.
Stooges: I still think Raw Power, with or without Bowie's knob twisting, is kinda crap. But their first 2 records were fuzzed out madness, the filthy sex of acid and heavy rock. Still two of the best heavy rock albums ever made. I don't really view them as punk per se, only in the sense that their rhythm section and Iggy's vocals, damaged and deranged as they were, still had the blues and especially the swing of Motown within that freaky sound. |
