PostPosted: Mon Oct 19, 2009 12:26 pm    Post subject: Advice: Best route (during rush hour) to get to Staples Center

Hi I thought I could seek some advice from LGers. I am flying into Orange County (John Wayne Airport) arriving at 330pm on Tuesday, October 27th to attend the opening night Lakers game (and ring ceremony). I am very excited and can't wait to see the defending NBA champions.

Since I will be leaving the airport about 430pm I was wondering what is the best route from Santa Ana, CA to get to downtown Los Angeles the quickest and the least resistance to traffic (if possible). And the reason I flew into this airport instead of LAX is because my friend and I are staying at a buddies house closer to the airport. FROM JOHN WAYNE AIRPORT:

[Take Interstate 5 to Downtown L.A. (Staples Center)...mapquest says it is 41 miles taking 48 minutes]

OR

[Take Interstate 405 to Interstate 110 to Downtown L.A. (Staples Center)...mapquest says it is 43 miles taking 49 minutes]

I figure I would ask those that are familiar with the freeway system in the Los Angeles / Orange County areas. Thanks for your help!

Neither will be quick. I'd take the 5. 405 sucks.

MapQuest is smoking crack.
During rush hour traffic and it expects the clip to be near 60 mph?

Either way, you're screwed. It's much much longer than that to get to downtoan LA during that time.

Option 2 is not an option. PERIOD. You try to do the 405 to the 101 you'll get inside Staples in time for Kobe to take his first breather.

The 5 is still hell, but it's your only option, and you will be on time.

405n to 110n.....you might get lucky, traffic should be heavier on the opposite directions at that hour

(think he meant the 110)

Wait... Isn't there are carpool on the 110? Could make it there a bit faster if he is going with some friends. Carpool doesn't exist for the 5 at all so that could save him some time.

just take the 5 route and hope for the best.
405 sucks, but the 110N on that route is good if you are in the carpool lane until you get near USC.

well they do in the valley...is that anywhere near the staples? hes coming from orange county, not santa barbara
405 north(most people are going south during rush hour until you pass the 110, but you'll be getting off there) then the 110 n to staples...trust me

Yeah I changed it meant 110 not 101...lol. I heard that too that most people will be going south on the 405 freeway and we are going north on the 405 freeway during rush hour.

So it is kinda split 50/50 between the two options. Thanks for the advice and if anyone else whom particularly has driven that route has an opinion let me know.

The 110 has a great carpool lane that will get you through most of the glut en route to Staples. But getting to the 110...you're talking 10-15 mpg from Long Beach until the 110 bottleneck.

I would still just stay on the 5. 3 hours...you'll defintely be on time. But if your flight is late, you're screwed.

Thanks, what are the chances my flight is late, accident on the freeway, freeway detour, and unusually heavy traffic? <Anti Jinx > I think things will work itself out. I just wanted to get everyone's opinion who is familiar with the area.

First off if you are being picked up and not going the car rental route, you shouldn't be taking a full hour to leave John Wayne. One of the easiest airports around. Try not to check and bag and save a few bucks. If I don't bag check I can make it out of the airport by car(picked up) in under 10 minutes from walking into the gate area.

The bags come out really slow at JW, but if you must check then, quick walk to BClaim from the gate. Have your buddy circle around on the cell, don't waste time with him parking and coming in, and pick you right out front of BClaim. Total 30-40.

That means 3.40pm to 4.10pm depending on the bags. Go straight on the 405 at that time. The 55 is already a parking lot at 3pm and the 405 North will slow in places, esp. until Beach Blvd. but won't be bad unless accidents.

Two choices--

405 North to 110 North using the carpool. Some traffic when nearing Staples. Stay on 110 unless you're really late then you would have to use a side street going north to avoid last few 110 North miles.

or 405 North to 605 North to 5 North to 10 West, then back way up to Staples off Los Angeles St area. Not bad but chance for some real slow downs on the completely unpredictable 5 North.

Lifelong Laker fan who will be attending first game at Staples. Attending a conference in San Diego but will be driving up to LA for game vs. Phoenix on Friday. What's the best way to get to downtown LA from San Diego on a Friday afternoon (will be staying at Westin downtown)? Any recommended restaurants in the Staples Center area? Will also be staying in LA all day Saturday. Any must do things for a one day trip? Only thing I have planned besides Laker game and visiting a friend is stopping by the Wildcard Gym and driving by the Forum...
