Not sure how many of you know what I meant so here it is. In "another sport" played by millions all across the world there is a relegation rule that affects the few bottom teams(3 or 4) in the league each season. These teams are sent to the lower level league for the next season and other teams from the top of the second division would jump up to the 1st league. Now that NBA has an official "lower division", NBDL or whatever it's called today, it could be something of interest. With lower division you make less profits because you don't get any TV money, even lose money if you got a crappy squad. To get back you gotta build a better team chemistry or the owner gotta pay for some free agents.
The only major difference that would be of some issue is the draft. But then again they way it is most of the draftees don't contribute right away so if their team is lower division for a year they'll get over it. It'll make you think again about jumping after freshman year. It is ridiculous and annoying to see the NBA get brought down by some owners who simply refuse to put money into the league and are content making a profit while putting garbage teams on the floor. It's also embarrasing to watch teams that are blatantly tanking the season to have a better chance in the lottery. Now I understand that these things mostly don't apply to Lakers but having a more competitive league would benefit all fans. Except or course that I'm sure Dr. Buss resents droping annual millions in taxes that go to Sterling's and other cheap owners that don't belong in the sport. |

It wouldn't work in the NBA.
Soccer would be better off learning from the NBA than vice versa. Adopting a salary cap would be a good start. _________________ Lakers |

It wouldn't happen, because bad or not, bottomdweller NBA teams are still good for much more money than top level NBDL teams. _________________ Los Angeles Lakers |

You need to understand that soccer teams in Europe are not franchises of a league. Instead, the leagues are collections of otherwise independent clubs. You don't get an expansion franchise in, say, the English Premier League. Instead, you form a club, work yourself up through the various tiers of English soccer, and eventually qualify for the EPL if you're good enough.
Relegation would be an interesting option in college sports, though. Imagine a series of super-conferences (Big 10, Big 12, SEC, Pac 10, etc.) working in conjunction with a number of smaller conferences. That would be an interesting system. |
